I think these are called Choke Cherries in Canada they grow along roadside and edges of fields. We would strip them off the branches into buckets. You would put them in your mouth and suck the juice from them and spit the skins and seeds out. Make great bread jam

Give a dry mouth if you try to chew them just suck them and spit the bitterness out
