Each clump is growing out of a root of an old maple stump. The growth pattern is so dramatic, that I thought is was Armillaria, but the cap is not scaly, and the flesh is really quite white. Also, other mushrooms with that dramatic dusting of spores, like the cloudy clitocybe, mention it someplace, and I've seen no mention of it when reading about Armillaria. It has a white spore print and no particular smell that I noticed.
