should be Clavariadelphus americanus which is often found under mixed oak and pine trees

Do the spores release from the end like a puff ball or from the outside wall like black trumpets?

The spores are growing at the outside. By the way, Clavariadelphus pistillaris have a bitter taste. Your specimens are small, so look at C. americanus or C. occidentalis.
